{"id":2812,"date":"2024-10-09T12:27:20","date_gmt":"2024-10-09T12:27:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/?p=2812"},"modified":"2024-10-09T12:27:29","modified_gmt":"2024-10-09T12:27:29","slug":"suicide-as-a-social-menace-in-nigeria-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/2024\/10\/09\/suicide-as-a-social-menace-in-nigeria-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Suicide as a social menace in nigeria (Part 2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<article id=\"the-post\" class=\"container-wrapper post-content tie-standard\">\n<div class=\"entry-content entry clearfix\">\n<p><strong>Our\u00a0Health columnist\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/2024\/09\/12\/health-talk-impact-and-psycho-social-implications-of-drug-abuse\/\">Dr Suleiman Tajudeen talks about\u00a0 suicide\u00a0 https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/2024\/09\/24\/health-talk-suicide-as-a-social-menace-in-nigeria\/ <\/a><\/strong>read part one here<\/p>\n<p>Financial constraints<\/p>\n<p>Family history of suicide<\/p>\n<p>Loss of loved ones (i.e. e bereavement )<\/p>\n<p>Mental illness (i depression, anxiety, etc)<\/p>\n<p>Physical illness<\/p>\n<p>Feeling inadequate or failing in life<\/p>\n<p>Unwanted pregnancy<\/p>\n<p>Cultural pressure<\/p>\n<p>Rejection of any kind<\/p>\n<p>Broken hearts<\/p>\n<p>Poor academic performance (ie failure in particular exams)<\/p>\n<p>Unemployment<\/p>\n<p>Insecurity<\/p>\n<p>Poverty<\/p>\n<p>Helplessness and other psycho-social stressors<\/p>\n<p>Marital problems<\/p>\n<p>Research evidence and clinical experience have indicated some of the armful things used to carry out suicide act in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Self-cutting<\/p>\n<p>The use of chemicals to harm oneself<\/p>\n<p>Burning oneself with kerosene or petroleum products<\/p>\n<p>The use of firearms (i.e. guns).<\/p>\n<p>Jumping from bridges to lagoons<\/p>\n<p>Use of kitchen knives or any sharp objects<\/p>\n<p>Use of insecticides like snipper<\/p>\n<p>Use of poisonous substances<\/p>\n<p>Overdose of prescribed drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment Approach For the Management of Suicide Problems in Nigeria:<\/p>\n<p>Medical attention for severe suicide cases<\/p>\n<p>Psychological management like cognitive behavioural therapy and supportive psychotherapy are needed<\/p>\n<div class=\"autors-widget\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"autors-container-0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Create awareness of the high prevalence of suicide in Nigeria<\/p>\n<p>Govt should come up with policies that will reduce the rate of poverty, unemployment and other psycho-social stressors in the society<\/p>\n<p>Non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders should talk about the challenges in fighting against suicide and promoting good mental health<\/p>\n<p>Students, workers and other members of society should speak out about their worries, for prompt medical intervention.<\/p>\n<p>The Mental Health Act 2021 which was signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023 was a welcome development based on the fact that it will enhance and protect the lives of people suffering from mental illnesses by giving them an increased opportunity to access mental health care. Based on the establishment of this mental health act, federal, state governments and other responsible authorities are to develop strategies that will spell out national goals for suicide prevention and a better way to achieve these noble objectives of reducing the rate of suicide in our society.<\/p>\n<p>Contacting a suicide hotline in Nigeria can be of help (ie SURPIN HELPLINE, a 24-hour phone line that provides support and referral services for suicide patients).<\/p>\n<p>Call for help from any mental health facilities in your area (ie LUTH, Department of Psychiatry, Idi-Araba, Lagos State,<\/p>\n<p>Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, Lagos in Lagos<\/p>\n<p>Limit access to the means of suicide (ie pesticides, firearms, and certain medications that can be used to carry out the act of suicide must be avoided in totality).<\/p>\n<p>Be media-friendly, listen to media reports on suicidal information (i.e. news reports on suicide in Nigeria and across the world)<\/p>\n<p>Improve upon your interpersonal relationship (ie speak out your worries to people that can be of help )<\/p>\n<p>Government t and NGOs should work with the media to ensure responsible reporting of high rate of suicide cases in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Developing and implementing mental health policies at the national and state levels as stipulated in the Mental Health Act 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Training and promoting mental health professionals, law enforcement personnel and community members in suicide prevention<\/p>\n<p>Promoting positive mental health through school-based programmes and workplace wellness initiatives<\/p>\n<p>Be your brother\u2019s keeper by supporting those who survived the attempts.<\/p>\n<p>In conclusion, all hands must be on deck by all reasonable authorities to adhere to the above health information in order to reduce the menace of suicide in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p><b>References<\/b><\/p>\n<p><em>Economic crunch, and depression driving suicide surge among Nigerian youths.
