{"id":3520,"date":"2024-12-26T09:13:56","date_gmt":"2024-12-26T09:13:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/?p=3520"},"modified":"2024-12-26T09:14:09","modified_gmt":"2024-12-26T09:14:09","slug":"ibadan-stampede-naomis-mother-laments-ex-queens-detention-appeals-to-tinubu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/2024\/12\/26\/ibadan-stampede-naomis-mother-laments-ex-queens-detention-appeals-to-tinubu\/","title":{"rendered":"Ibadan stampede: Naomi\u2019s mother laments ex-queen\u2019s detention, appeals to Tinubu"},"content":{"rendered":"<section id=\"article-page\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-lg-8\">\n<article class=\"single-article\">\n<div class=\"post-content\">\n<p>Mrs Funmilayo Ogunseyi, the mother of Naomi Silekunola, a former wife of the Ooni of Ife, has called on President Bola Tinubu and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene in her daughter\u2019s legal troubles.<\/p>\n<p>Silekunola is among three individuals taken before the Iyaganku Magistrate Court in Ibadan in connection with a tragic funfair stampede that resulted in the death of 35 children last week.<\/p>\n<p>The court has since ordered the remand of the accused in prison on charges bordering on conspiracy, negligent acts causing harm, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities at the event.<\/p>\n<p>In an emotional video that has gone viral, Mrs Ogunseyi pleaded for mercy, asserting that her daughter\u2019s intentions were purely humanitarian.<\/p>\n<div id=\"show360playvid\" class=\"360playvidUnit\">\n<div class=\"cleanslate360pv\">\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to her, Naomi had organised numerous outreach programmes over the past decade to assist the needy, elderly, children, and pregnant women across Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>She lamented that her daughter\u2019s goodwill had inadvertently led to the stampede and subsequent deaths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHave mercy on me. Mothers have mercy. Come to my rescue. Don\u2019t let my life be destroyed. My child only came to Ibadan to help the needy; this was not her first time. We have travelled across the country helping children and the vulnerable. I sympathise with the families who lost their children; it was never our intention. Please, don\u2019t let Naomi be imprisoned\u2014she is innocent. She only came to show compassion,\u201d Ogunseyi said tearfully.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ad-container desktop-only margin-top margin-bottom \">\n<div class=\"ad-container-inner\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"read-also\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>She recounted the events leading to the tragedy, noting that crowds had gathered hours before the programme\u2019s scheduled start time of 10 a.m.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, the stampede began around 6:30 a.m., long before Naomi arrived at the venue.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Ogunseyi further revealed that Naomi, who was reportedly unwell, fainted during police interrogation and remains in custody despite her fragile health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe programme was meant to begin at 10 a.m., but people started arriving the day before. By 6:30 a.m., the crowd became uncontrollable. Naomi wasn\u2019t even there yet. I received a call about the chaos while still asleep. My phone number was on the event flyer, so I was the one contacted. Naomi, her elder brother, and I immediately went to the police station to report the incident, but she was detained and later charged with murder,\u201d Ogunseyi narrated.<\/p>\n<p>Breaking down in tears, Ogunseyi appealed to President Tinubu and other influential Nigerians to intervene. She claimed that her daughter\u2019s predicament was orchestrated by \u201cpowerful persons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have taken my child to prison. The court was full of policemen. I don\u2019t know where else to turn. They say her ordeal is an \u2018order from above.\u2019 Please, I beg those in power to release her. She is not a killer; she came to help. Naomi is fragile and sick.
