{"id":4133,"date":"2025-02-11T14:55:51","date_gmt":"2025-02-11T14:55:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/?p=4133"},"modified":"2025-02-11T14:56:00","modified_gmt":"2025-02-11T14:56:00","slug":"house-of-reps-demand-suspension-of-telecom-tariff-hike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/2025\/02\/11\/house-of-reps-demand-suspension-of-telecom-tariff-hike\/","title":{"rendered":"House Of Reps Demand Suspension Of Telecom Tariff Hike"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"mvp-content-body-top\" class=\"left relative\">\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\" class=\"left relative\">\n<h3>The House of Representatives has directed the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, as well as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), to suspend the planned increase in telecommunications tariffs until service quality improves.<\/h3>\n<p>The decision followed a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by <strong>Oboji Oforji<\/strong> (PDP, Bayelsa) on the need to halt the proposed tariff hike by telecom companies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-3\">\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1304679\" data-uid=\"00201\">\n<div id=\"mgw1304679_00201\">\n<div class=\"mgbox\">\n<div class=\"mgline teaser-mgBanner_1304679_1_4 mgline-banner type-w\" data-i=\"2rSUffk7y7X8ncfegiHKInHV0usREITdP6c_WodLJ9kxErCqY9e31as4mMAWlib1oaXOuTL6LDWmiKopIus91AxTK1DV3L0CpdMVgoAg-Rs*\" data-observing-start=\"0\" data-observing-time=\"0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Leading the debate, Oforji recalled the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy&#8217;s announcement by Dr. Bosun Tijani, regarding an impending increase in telecommunications tariffs.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAccording to the Minister, consultations are ongoing as some of these companies have agitated to increase tariffs to as high as 100 per cent. He, however, said it would not be a 100 percent increase and that the Nigerian Communications Commission would approve the new tariffs and announce them in due course,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He noted that telecom operators have been advocating for a tariff hike for over eleven years, as stated by the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) and the Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATC<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThey argued that the telcos need cost-reflective tariffs in the face of adverse economic reality like record inflation of 34.6 percent in November 2024 and losses resulting from foreign exchange fluctuations,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he explained.<\/p>\n<p>However, the National Association of Telecoms Subscribers rejected the proposed increase, describing it as insensitive and an additional burden on consumers already grappling with economic hardship and poor service delivery.<\/p>\n<p>Oforji emphasized that before any price hike, telecommunications companies must improve their service delivery, which has been a persistent complaint among Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe far-reaching effects of these price hikes will deepen financial struggles for the average Nigerian, threaten the country\u2019s vision of leveraging technology to drive economic revival, exacerbate poverty, and widen existing inequalities, hitting lower-income families the hardest,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he stated.<\/p>\n<p>He further highlighted the necessity of affordable connectivity in critical sectors such as digital banking, education, healthcare, agriculture, and e-governance.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cInformal sector workers who depend on affordable mobile data to access gig work opportunities may find it harder to stay connected,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he added.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<p>Oforji warned that a 10 percent increase in telecommunications costs could reduce small business profitability by up to 7 percent, potentially leading to business closures.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSmall businesses, which rely heavily on affordable telecommunication for operations, marketing, and customer engagement, will face additional financial burdens,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting the motion, Billy Osawaru (APC, Edo) argued that Nigerians should not continue to suffer whenever economic adjustments are made.<\/p>\n<div id=\"browsi_adWrapper_ai_1_ati_1_rc_0\">\n<div id=\"browsi_adContainer_ai_1_ati_1_rc_0\">\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1708002\" data-uid=\"09e2b\">\n<div id=\"mgw1708002_09e2b\">\n<div class=\"mgbox\">\n<div id=\"8e2f7928-e887-11ef-ad54-e43d1a2a04aa\" class=\"mgline teaser-21919547 type-w teaser3\" data-i=\"cBPjsZ6QEQpsFB9aS6b298ks_94DHXdyTwoAKPFXoV-DdkhvW6J5Snh-E5yjOM-dNoA9t08AQCYm299TVOfbVD8hY_1RCzBAlArEHH1bG4c*\" data-cat=\"IAB7-12\" data-observing-start=\"0\" data-observing-time=\"0\">\n<div class=\"image-with-text\">\n<div class=\"mcimg\">\n<div class=\"image-container\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>\u201cIn the developed world, people pay for the services they enjoy, and such services must be top-notch. The services rendered by these telecom companies are ineffective to the extent that Nigerians have to carry two phones everywhere they go,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe are not saying tariffs should not be increased, but that should not be now. They should first show us why they want to increase their tariff.
