The MV Great Cotonou, the first Con-Ro vessel offering direct service from Shanghai to Lagos, docked at PTML Terminal on Tuesday. Operated by Grimaldi Group, it reduces transit time to 27 days, eliminating the need for transhipment at intermediary ports.<\/p>\n

This new route allows Nigerian traders to receive containerized cargo and vehicles, including cars and trucks, on the same vessel. The Great Cotonou is a G5 class ship, measuring 250 meters long and capable of transporting 4,700 linear meters of rolling freight.<\/p>\n

Ascanio Russo, managing director of PTML, highlighted its significance as the largest container-roro ship in Africa. The direct shipping route simplifies logistics and reduces costs for importers and exporters, with a potential 10-day reduction in lead times.<\/p>\n

Andrea Grimaldi noted the service aims to enhance trade links between Shanghai and West Africa, with plans to expand to other Chinese ports as demand grows.<\/p>\n

Experts believe this route could help address Nigeria’s trade deficit with China, which exceeded $15.49 billion in 2023. Improvements in supply chain efficiency and reduced costs may lead to lower prices for goods and services in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

Grimaldi has invested over $15 million in infrastructure upgrades at PTML to support this new service, promising significant opportunities for the terminal and the local community.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
