The Nigerian Shippers\u2019 Council (NSC) recently announced a significant milestone: the Nigerian Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill has successfully passed through the National Assembly and is now awaiting presidential assent from President Bola Tinubu.<\/p>\n

During the opening of the 2025 Operational Retreat for middle management staff in Abeokuta, Ogun State, NSC\u2019s Executive Secretary, Dr. Pius Akutah, emphasized the importance of this legislative development. He explained that the passage of the bill marks the establishment of a robust, independent regulatory agency equipped with enforceable legal powers\u2014 a significant upgrade from the current regulatory framework governing Nigeria’s ports.<\/p>\n

Dr. Akutah highlighted that this event is particularly meaningful as it signifies the transition from the NSC to the new Nigerian Port Economic Regulatory Agency, reflecting the administration’s commitment to a more structured and efficient port regulatory system.<\/p>\n

He stated, “You are all aware of the progress we are making on the bill that has been passed by the National Assembly, which is now before Mr. President for assent. The Nigerian Port Economic Regulatory Agency represents our concerted efforts to enhance regulation within the sector.”<\/p>\n

Additionally, he noted President Tinubu’s dedication not only to addressing regulatory challenges but also to advancing the broader blue economy in Nigeria. “This agency\u2019s establishment comes at a crucial time to bolster our efforts in regulating the sector towards achieving a more prosperous Nigeria,” Akutah affirmed.<\/p>\n

He further elaborated on the bill\u2019s provisions, which include legal measures for enforcing regulations, including aspects related to criminal prosecution. This new framework aims to improve the overall efficiency and accountability of the port sector.<\/p>\n

“On our part, we have been diligently working to support the industry by reducing arbitrary charges, enhancing stakeholder engagement, and providing effective dispute resolution. Even as we transition, our commitment to progress remains unwavering,” he stressed.<\/p>\n
