The goods, which included stuffed tires, subpar steel doors, and faulty spark plugs, were condemned and set ablaze in a coordinated effort overseen by SON officials along with industry stakeholders and security agencies.

During the operation, SON’s Director General, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, represented by Mr. Mandi Pious Lawan, emphasised that this action underscores Nigeria’s dedication to public safety. “This isn’t just an administrative step,” he stated. “It’s a firm declaration that SON won’t tolerate unsafe or counterfeit products in our markets.”

He warned that these substandard items could pose serious risks: the stuffed tires could cause deadly accidents, the steel doors could fail safety standards, and the defective spark plugs might lead to engine failures. This operation aligns with SON’s mandate under the Standards Organisation of Nigeria Act, empowering the agency to enforce standards and ensure only safe, certified goods reach consumers.

Dr. Okeke also praised the diligent efforts of SON’s Inspectorate and Compliance Department, as well as the collaborative support from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Customs Service, and others. He urged consumers to prioritise buying quality, certified products, highlighting the critical role public vigilance plays in cleaning up the market.

“In unity, we can rid Nigeria of the dangers posed by substandard goods,” he affirmed.

Reaffirming SON’s resolve, Dr. Okeke pledged that the agency will persist in its mission until Nigeria is free from hazardous and counterfeit products. The destruction serves as a stern warning to importers and local manufacturers alike: the era of compromising standards is over. SON remains steadfast in its goal of ensuring consumer safety and restoring integrity across Nigeria’s industrial landscape.

Son, In a clear demonstration of its commitment to safeguarding Nigerian consumers, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) destroyed a large shipment of substandard products at its Lagos warehouse in Amuwo-Odofin on Tuesday.
