I implore our brothers and sisters in the North to en\u00adcourage their compatriots residing in the South to integrate peacefully with\u00adin their host communities. The prac\u00adtice of some Northerners choosing to live in the forests, openly displaying AK-47s without consequence, must be actively discouraged. This isolation creates an environment conducive to criminal activities, including kidnap\u00adping, the rape of vulnerable women, and the facilitation of ransom pay\u00adments, all of which must be addressed.<\/p>\n
Just as Southerners live harmoni\u00adously among their Northern neigh\u00adbors in both rural and urban areas, Northerners should reciprocate this integration within their host com\u00admunities. It is counterproductive to label all Southerners as killers while simultaneously failing to advise one\u2019s own community on the importance of peaceful coexistence. Consider how Northerners would react if South\u00aderners were heavily armed, residing in the forests instead of integrating within the communities, brandishing AK-47s at locals, and disrupting their peace.<\/p>\n
In Nigeria, private ownership of firearms is restricted, yet we witness Northerners openly carrying various weapons in Southern forests with seemingly no intervention from the security agencies. This disparity in enforcement raises serious concerns about the rule of law. It is both disap\u00adpointing and disheartening that in the South, individuals are often denied the right to self-defence, even for the pro\u00adtection of their families. This situation has sparked significant debate regard\u00ading the fairness and consistency of law enforcement.<\/p>\n
It has been widely observed that when a Fulani individual is appre\u00adhended with a firearm, the common narrative from security agencies and Northern advocacy groups is that the individual is simply a hunter. Howev\u00ader, if a person from the Delta region, for example, is found with a similar weapon, they are often labelled as mil\u00aditants. This double standard is deeply troubling and undermines public trust in the justice system.<\/p>\n
This same biased application of the law extends to the Igbo region. A Fu\u00adlani individual found with a firearm in Igbo land is frequently identified as a herdsman, while an Igbo person in the same situation is often branded as an IPOB terrorist. This inconsistent labelling based on ethnicity creates a dangerous precedent and fuels socie\u00adtal divisions. This is the unfortunate reality of our current security appa\u00adratus, where being guilty or innocent appears to be determined by the tribe or religion of the accused.<\/p>\n
The recent Uromi killings repre\u00adsent a tragic example of the escalating violence plaguing Nigeria, and it de\u00admands an immediate and comprehen\u00adsive response from the government. Beyond addressing this specific inci\u00addent, the government must intensify efforts to quell rising tensions across the nation. This requires a commit\u00adment to thorough investigations into every instance of homicide, ensur\u00ading that perpetrators are brought to justice and held accountable for their heinous crimes, regardless of their background or affiliations.<\/p>\n
Justice must be seen to be served swiftly and impartially to restore public trust and deter future acts of violence. This commitment should encompass strengthening forensic capabilities, enhancing investigative procedures, and bolstering the judicial system to ensure efficient and effec\u00adtive prosecution of offenders. Accu\u00adsations of widespread criminality or land grabbing should be substantiated with concrete evidence and addressed through legal channels, rather than resorting to sweeping condemnations that can further exacerbate tensions and fuel mistrust.<\/p>\n
The adage, \u201conuru ube nwanne ya agbalaoso\u201d (a sibling does not run away while their sibling is being roasted), underscores the importance of solidarity and mutual support within all communities in Nigeria, especially with the advocacy of the DG-DSS, which elicited self-protection, defence and preservation of all ethnic nationalities’ ancestral lands from all terrorist groups.<\/p>\n
However, this princi\u00adple of self-defence should not be mis\u00adinterpreted as condoning criminal behaviour or shielding perpetrators from justice.<\/p>\n
It is about ensuring that individu\u00adals are not unjustly targeted or mar\u00adginalized based on their ethnicity or origin. The right to self-defence is enshrined in law, and communities should be empowered to exercise this right responsibly and within legal boundaries. This includes provid\u00ading access to self-defence training, promoting awareness of legal rights and responsibilities, and establishing effective community security mech\u00adanisms. Leaders in the Southern re\u00adgion should prioritise these initiatives to ensure the safety and well-being of their constituents.<\/p>\n
It is essential to strike a balance be\u00adtween individual rights and collective responsibility, fostering a culture of respect for the law while also empow\u00adering communities to protect them\u00adselves from harm. Just as a tree doesn\u2019t naturally react to protect itself from damage, communities have a right to defend themselves against threats to their safety and security. Nigeria\u2019s cur\u00adrent climate of mistrust and division demands a collective commitment to fostering unity and understanding. We must move beyond tribalism and embrace our shared humanity.<\/p>\n

The pursuit of justice should not come at the expense of innocent lives or further erode the bonds that hold our nation together. We must learn from our past mistakes and prioritize reconciliation and healing to build a more just and peaceful future for all Nigerians. A collective effort is re\u00adquired to address the root causes of conflict, promote dialogue, and foster a sense of shared responsibility for the well-being of our nation. I com\u00admend those Nigerians, particularly my Northern brothers and sisters, who are advocating for impartial and effective security services.<\/p>\n
Law enforcement must operate without bias, treating all criminals equally regardless of their tribal or political affiliations. The call for unity and understanding, such as the plea by Sanusi Lamido Sanusi urging Northerners to refrain from attacking non-indigenes in response to the Uromi killings, is a crucial step towards healing and building a more just society. We must move be\u00adyond generalisations and address the underlying issues that contribute to insecurity.<\/p>\n
This includes tackling poverty, un\u00ademployment, and the lack of access to education, which can create breeding grounds for criminal activity. Fur\u00adthermore, fostering inter-communal dialogue and promoting cultural un\u00adderstanding are essential for building trust and breaking down harmful stereotypes. The government must also invest in equipping and training security forces to effectively combat crime while upholding the rights of all citizens. A comprehensive approach that addresses both the symptoms and the root causes of insecurity is crucial for achieving lasting peace and stabil\u00adity in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
This requires a commitment from all stakeholders, including govern\u00adment officials, community leaders, and citizens, to work together to\u00adwards a common goal of a safe and secure nation for all. We must reject divisive rhetoric and embrace a spirit of unity and cooperation to overcome the challenges we face. Only through collective action can we build a future where all Nigerians can live in peace and harmony, free from fear and vio\u00adlence. The time for the change is now, and we must seize this opportunity to create a better future for ourselves and generations to come.
