C23, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to Provide for the Principle of Rotation of the Offices of the President and the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria among the Six Geopolitical Zones of the Country, Namely: North Central, North East, North West, South East, South South, and South West and Related Matters (HB. 2291).\u2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-3\" data-ai=\"WzMsMCwiSW5jb250ZW50IDIgLyBNZ2lkIiwiIiwzXQ==\">\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1304679\" data-uid=\"0ec6c\">\n<div id=\"mgw1304679_0ec6c\">\n<div class=\"mgbox\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>This bill was one of seven constitutional amendment proposals scheduled for a second reading on the House Order Paper for Tuesday, May 13, 2025.<\/p>\n<div id=\"browsi_adWrapper_ai_0_ati_1_rc_0\">\n<div id=\"browsi_adContainer_ai_0_ati_1_rc_0\">\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1702118\" data-uid=\"06e91\">\n<div id=\"mgw1702118_06e91\">\n<div class=\"mgbox\">\n<div class=\"mgheader\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"70430a9d-308c-11f0-b5c1-d404e6774b40\" class=\"mgline teaser-23418343 type-w teaser3\" data-i=\"BvRnGAtJKuPRpWbgw6sot4gV2SzPv5kcbleVIze8uek2l5LN39f9HPBnAqw83-GkNoA9t08AQCYm299TVOfbVENrlxqf2VXhLu6iTf4cv90*\" data-observing-start=\"0\" data-observing-time=\"0\">\n<div class=\"image-with-text\">\n<div class=\"text-elements\">\n<div class=\"text_on_hover\">\n<div class=\"mcdomain\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Following the reading of the titles of these bills by the House Leader, the Deputy Speaker, who was presiding over the session, invited lawmakers to share their views on the proposals.<\/p>\n<p>During the discussion, Rep Aliyu Madaki (NNPP, Kano) expressed his opposition to the bill, asserting that the existing constitutional principle of federal character sufficiently covered the concerns it aimed to address.<\/p>\n<p>He contended that the decision regarding the zoning of the presidency should be left to individual political parties, arguing against the necessity of embedding such a provision in the constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, Rep Ali Isah (PDP, Gombe) disagreed with Madaki\u2019s stance, advocating that incorporating rotational presidency into the constitution would promote fairness and inclusivity for all geopolitical zones.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Rep Sada Soli (APC, Katsina) also opposed the bill, stating that the proposed legislation would be detrimental to national unity and could result in the prioritisation of mediocrity over competence in leadership.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIt could play up regional and ethnic interests over competency. It will encourage limited choice of people that can vie for office and it will encourage regional rivalry which negates the spirit of unity,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Soli said.<\/p>\n<p>In response to Soli\u2019s stance, Kalu rejected the notion of promoting mediocrity, asserting that every geopolitical zone in the nation possesses qualified individuals capable of holding the offices of president and vice president.<\/p>\n<div id=\"browsi_adWrapper_ai_1_ati_1_rc_0\">\n<div id=\"browsi_adContainer_ai_1_ati_1_rc_0\">\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1708002\" data-uid=\"0e56f\">\n<div id=\"mgw1708002_0e56f\">\n<div class=\"mgbox\">\n<div class=\"mgheader\">\n<div class=\"mg_addad1708002 mglogo\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>He emphasised that the bill\u2019s purpose is to guarantee that all regions of the country can participate in governance and national development.
