The terminal operator clarified the root causes of the situation, reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, service efficiency, and close collaboration with stakeholders to resolve the issue swiftly.<\/p>\n
There have been circulating reports suggesting that APM Terminals Apapa is not effectively receiving empty containers, which allegedly contributes to the ongoing yard congestion. The terminal management, however, explained that the responsibility for managing the evacuation of empties into the terminal and their subsequent shipment onto vessels lies solely with the shipping lines, which own and control the containers.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued Thursday, Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen explained that the recent sharp and sustained increase in import cargo volumes has compelled shipping lines to prioritise unloading laden containers over evacuating empties. This operational shift has led to a growing inventory of empty containers within the terminal, causing significant space constraints.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a consequence of this accumulation, APM Terminals Apapa has had to temporarily restrict the reception of additional empty containers until the existing stock is cleared by the shipping lines,\u201d Knudsen stated.<\/p>\n
He emphasised that the congestion is not due to operational failure on the part of the terminal but is rooted in systemic issues related to the imbalance of container traffic. \u201cShipping lines are responsible for ensuring that containers are returned as empties and shipped out promptly. Unfortunately, the surge in import volumes is disrupting this balance. We are doing everything within our capacity to support and expedite container clearance,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
APM Terminals Apapa has called on landslide customers, truck operators, and other stakeholders to exercise patience during this temporary restriction. The terminal assures all parties that every effort is underway to restore normal operations.<\/p>\n
