The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has stepped up its campaign against fuel smuggling by deploying freshly inducted officers to Operation Whirlwind, a specialised tactical unit established in May 2024 to curb the illegal movement of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) across Nigeria\u2019s borders.<\/p>\n
The induction ceremony, held on June 3, 2025, in Abuja, marked a renewed vow to protect the nation’s economic interests. During the event, the new officers were charged to uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and vigilance in the execution of their duties.<\/p>\n
Speaking to the operatives, Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, emphasised the significance of their mission. \u201cWe must always conduct ourselves with integrity. Never compromise your principles or abuse your position in this operation. Customs plays a vital role in ensuring the availability of fuel for Nigeria\u2019s needs,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n
He further explained, \u201cThrough Operation Whirlwind, the NCS is committed to delivering impactful service to the nation. We want to guarantee that our fuel is not smuggled into neighbouring countries, undermining our economy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Adeniyi also highlighted the importance of technology in their operations. \u201cWe will organise training programs to help you leverage tools like Geospatial Intelligence technology while in the field,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, ACG Hussein Ejibunu, the National Coordinator of Operation Whirlwind, underscored that the success of this mission hinges on strategic execution, discipline, and personal commitment. \u201cMaintain the momentum you\u2019ve already built and stay focused on our shared objectives,\u201d he urged.<\/p>\n
