President Bola Tinubu awarded national honours to illustrious figures who have played pivotal roles in Nigeria\u2019s democratic journey. The ceremony took place during a joint session of the National Assembly, as part of the 2025 Democracy Day celebrations.<\/p>\n
In a heartfelt address, President Tinubu emphasised the importance of recognising those who sacrificed so much for Nigeria\u2019s democracy. \u201cAs we mark twenty-six years of uninterrupted democratic rule, it is only fitting that we honour those who braved adversity, stood against violence, and made sacrifices to uphold our democratic values,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
Among the honourees, the President posthumously conferred the prestigious CFR (Commander of the Federal Republic) on Kudirat Abiola, the heroine of the June 12 struggle, and the late Chief MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of Nigeria\u2019s 1993 presidential election. And Humphrey Nwosu for his steadfastness in conducting one of Nigeria’s ever-free and fair elections, even when the military mandated that he stop.<\/p>\n
He also recognised other heroes of Nigeria\u2019s democratic history, awarding posthumous honours to notable figures such as Shehu Musa Yar\u2019Adua, Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, Pa. Alfred Rewani, Bagauda Kaltho, Chima Ubani, Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, Alao Aka Bashorun, Chief Frank Kokori, Emma Ezeazu, Bamidele Aturu, Fredrick Fasehun, Professor Festus Iyayi, and many others.<\/p>\n
In addition, the President bestowed national honours on prominent Nigerians, including Prof. Wole Soyinka, Prof. Olatunji Dare, journalist Kunle Ajibade, Nosa Igiebor, Dapo Olorunyomi, Bayo Onanuga, Ayo Obe, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, Senator Shehu Sani, Governor Uba Sani, and legal luminaries Femi Falana and Luke Aghanenu, among many others.<\/p>\n
A special honour was also conferred on veteran journalist and publisher Uncle Sam Amuka Pemu, in recognition of his integrity and contribution to Nigerian journalism as he celebrates his 90th birthday on June 13.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, in a move to honour the fallen heroes, President Tinubu granted posthumous national honours to Ken Saro Wiwa, leader of the Ogoni Nine, and other distinguished Nigerians,s including Saturday Dobee, Nordu Eawo, Daniel Gbooko, Paul Levera, Felix Nuate, Baribor Bera, Barinem Kiobel, and John Kpuine. In conjunction with the National Council of State, he announced plans to exercise his prerogative of mercy, granting full pardons to these national icons and others whose names will be revealed later.<\/p>\n
