The lawmaker representing Imo West in the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Senator Osita Izunaso, has called on the federal government to release the embattled leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, on bail.<\/h3>\n

According to him, a political solution to the situation involving Kanu is ideal for all concerned.<\/p>\n

He claimed that if Kanu is released on bail, it will reduce violence in the southeast and criminal elements who have hijacked his struggle will lose their legitimacy and can get arrested if they perpetrate any violent activities after that.<\/p>\n

Senator Izunaso made the recommendation at a media parley in Abuja on Friday to mark his two years in the Senate.<\/p>\n

He said,\u00a0\u201cI have consistently advocated that the federal government give Nnamdi Kanu\u2019s case political consideration.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIf granted bail, it could significantly reduce insecurity in the region. Criminal elements have hijacked the struggle. Once Kanu is released, they\u2019ll lose any legitimacy they claim.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Izunaso argued that the bail and dialogue may not solve the situation completely, but will de-escalate tensions in the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not saying it will stop the violence 100 per cent, but it will go a long way. Once the real struggle ends, any further violence becomes purely criminal,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he added.<\/p>\n

Anim State<\/h2>\n

Also during the parley, Izunaso disclosed that a bill for the creation of \u201cAnim state\u201d in the south-east geopolitical zone is currently before the Senate.<\/p>\n

He said the bill, which recommends that the new state be carved out of Anambra and Imo, has passed second reading and is now before the committee on constitution review.<\/p>\n

The lawmaker argued that the demand for a new state is a matter of equity because other geopolitical zones have more states than the Southeast.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a favour, it\u2019s a matter of equity. Every other region in the country has six states, except the southeast, which has only five.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re not asking for too much \u2014 just what the federal character principle demands,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The senator said the creation of Anim state would follow due democratic process.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
