The aftermath of Kenya\u2019s recent protests marking the anniversary of a so-called crackdown on anti-tax demonstrations has taken a tragic turn. According to the Kenyan National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), the death toll has climbed to 19, with an additional 15 individuals reported missing.<\/p>\n
The protests that swept across Kenya this Wednesday drew thousands into the streets, but they quickly descended into chaos. Clashes erupted between young protesters and police, leading to widespread destruction of businesses and property. In his statement, the KNCHR strongly condemned the human rights violations and called for accountability from those responsible.<\/p>\n
So far, the commission has documented 19 fatalities, 15 enforced disappearances, 531 wounded individuals, and 179 arrests. This disturbing footage of violence prompted Human Rights Watch to urge Kenyan authorities to be held accountable for the abuses witnessed.<\/p>\n
\u201cKenyan authorities should not treat protesters as criminals,\u201d stated Otsieno Namwaya, Africa director at Human Rights Watch, emphasising the need for respectful handling of demonstrators.<\/p>\n
The international community, including the United Nations, expressed concern over the violence. The UN called for calm and restraint, urging all parties to de-escalate the situation.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Kenyan government condemned the destruction and looting that occurred during the protests. The Ministry of Agriculture reported that over 7,354 bags of fertiliser\u2014valued at approximately $230,000\u2014were stolen from a depot in Meru, about 200 kilometres east of Nairobi. They warned that this act of vandalism poses a serious threat to Kenya\u2019s food security, especially during the planting season.<\/p>\n
Fertiliser is vital for local farmers, and its loss could trigger a potential crisis affecting both food and cash crop production. Agriculture Minister Mutahi Kagwe has called for swift arrests and prosecutions of those responsible for the theft.<\/p>\n
