Making a bold, controversial statement, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has branded President Bola Tinubu\u2019s flagship Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project as a \u201cscam.\u201d Speaking during an interview on Inside Sources with Laolu Akande<\/em> on Channels Television, Lawal expressed deep scepticism about the administration\u2019s track record in delivering impactful infrastructure.<\/div>\n

No Visible Impact Yet<\/strong><\/p>\n

Babachir Lawal, who served under President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s government, criticised the current administration for failing to deliver any tangible or impactful projects that everyday Nigerians can see or feel. When asked about the government\u2019s infrastructural achievements, Lawal was blunt:
\n\u201cI cannot see any.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

He pointed out that, from his frequent travels across Nigeria, there\u2019s little evidence of roads or infrastructure being constructed or rehabilitated, whether in the North or the South-West.<\/p>\n

The Persistent Problem of Unfulfilled Promises<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lawal also highlighted the perennial issue of unfulfilled promises, particularly citing the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, which has been a political talking point for successive administrations.
\n\u201cIt appears every government talks about it and allocates money, but it never gets anywhere,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he remarked. For Lawal, Nigerians have grown weary of hearing repeated promises that rarely turn into completed projects.<\/p>\n

Dismissing the Coastal Highway as a \u201cScam\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The critique turned sharply toward the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, launched by President Tinubu in May. The first phase, which spans just 30 kilometres from Ahmadu Bello Way to Eleko Village in Lekki, Lagos, has been heavily criticised.<\/p>\n

Lawal did not hold back, declaring:
\n\u201cTheir so-called coastal road is just a scam. Every Nigerian knows it is a scam. Even before they started, we knew it would be a scam, and it has become one.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

He argued that the project\u2019s partial commencement is a misplaced priority amidst Nigeria\u2019s rising national debt, questioning the logic behind the celebration over such a limited feat.<\/p>\n

Concerns Over Transparency and Resource Management<\/strong><\/p>\n

Furthermore, the former SGF voiced concerns over the government\u2019s borrowing practices and transparency. He criticised the tendency to borrow from Europe, only for the funds to be spent abroad, leaving Nigerians questioning what exactly their money is being used for.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has become such that the President can go and commission 30 kilometres of a 700-kilometre road, which has even become a source of controversy,”<\/em>\u00a0Lawal lamented.\u00a0\u201cWhat are they truly doing with our money?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
