Enugu State Government, under the leadership of Governor Peter Mbah, made a significant leap earlier this week with the official launch of\u00a0Enugu Air<\/strong>, a new state-owned airline. This development marks Enugu as the second Nigerian state to establish its commercial airline, and notably the first in the South-East region. The first was Ibom Airline<\/strong>, launched in June 2019 and fully owned by the Akwa Ibom State Government in Nigeria’s South-South region.<\/p>\n

The historic event took place at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, with Nigeria\u2019s Minister of Aviation Development, Festus Keyamo, officiating the ceremony.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are starting with three modern Embraer aircraft, tailored for our terrain,” he said. “Our initial routes will connect Enugu to Abuja and Lagos\u2014forming a powerful gold triangle.”<\/p>\n

Looking ahead, he announced plans to expand both within Nigeria and internationally, with routes to Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, Kano, and beyond. The long-term vision is even more ambitious: flights beyond Nigeria to other African nations, China, Europe, the UK, the US, and major global hubs.<\/p>\n

The airline aims to catalyze job creation, entrepreneurial growth, and enhanced connectivity. Mbah highlighted that Enugu Air would also open avenues for local and foreign investment, positioning the state as a key player in regional aviation.<\/p>\n

Minister Keyamo praised Governor Mbah for his perseverance, recalling how the governor\u2019s proactive approach contributed to the airline’s realisation. “Governor Mbah was the first to visit me after I became minister. His persistence was incredible\u2014coming to Abuja weekly to push this project forward,” he remarked.<\/p>\n

He also lauded Enugu’s choice of\u00a0XEjet<\/strong>\u00a0as a partner and operator, describing them as highly skilled, Nigeria-owned industry leaders. “XEjet is also managing Sierra Leone\u2019s national airline\u2014a testament to the quality of local expertise supporting Enugu Air.”<\/p>\n

Divided Perspectives on the Initiative<\/h3>\n

Despite the celebrations, opinions are divided on whether launching an airline is the most pressing need for Enugu at this moment. Some view it as a move to diversify the local economy and reduce dependence on federal allocations. Others argue that the focus should have been on urgent social needs, like improving potable water supply for citizens\u2014a promise many believe has been neglected.<\/p>\n

Public Opinion: Support and Criticism<\/h3>\n

Lagos-based lawyer Mr. Kenneth Eze voiced scepticism, suggesting that basic amenities like water should take precedence. “While investing in airlines is commendable, many in Enugu cannot afford air travel. Water and healthcare should be top priorities\u2014especially water, which sustains life,” he said.<\/p>\n

Conversely, many analysts see the airline as an opportunity for growth. Celestine Ikechukwu Nnamani, a public affairs analyst, applauded the move, emphasising its potential to make Enugu financially self-sufficient and boost infrastructural development.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf managed well, Enugu could join Nigeria\u2019s league of revenue-generating states,\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0he said. However, he urged transparency in managing the airline, warning against mismanagement like many Nigerian public enterprises.<\/p>\n

Dahiru Majeed, a journalist and analyst, likened the initiative to the regional development strategies of Nigeria\u2019s First Republic leaders, such as Chief Michael Okpara, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and Alhaji Ahmadu Bello. These leaders invested in revenue-generating industries, creating jobs and expanding regional economies.<\/p>\n

He emphasised the importance of guarding Enugu Air from political interference and ensuring its sustainability. Drawing parallels with Ethiopian Airlines\u2014one of Africa\u2019s most profitable carriers\u2014he noted that deliberate governance decisions, focused on excellence and integrity, are critical for lasting success.<\/p>\n

As Enugu takes this bold step, the hope is for future administrations to uphold the airline\u2019s growth and ensure it isn\u2019t compromised by politics. If managed properly, Enugu Air could serve as a model for other states aspiring to self-reliance.<\/p>\n
