Okpebholo’s Threat Against Peter Obi

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned what it describes as a blatant death threat issued by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, directed at 2027 presidential hopeful, Peter Obi.In a statement that has sparked widespread outrage, the governor warned Obi not to enter Edo State without prior approval from him. Critics argue that this qualifies as an intimidation tactic reminiscent of thuggery, and some have gone further to label it an outright threat to Obi’s safety.

This isn’t the first time Obi has encountered hostility from authorities in APC-led states. Previously, Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia also cautioned Obi during a visit, raising concerns over the increasingly tense political climate.

Governor Okpebholo reportedly told Obi that he could enter Edo at his own risk, asserting, “If anything happens to him here, he will have himself to blame. I’m not joking.” He also cited a recent visit by Obi, during which he donated N15 million to a nursing school in Benin City, saying the act was followed by unrest leading to casualties in the city.

In response, CUPP’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Peter Ameh, issued a strong statement condemning the governor’s remarks. He emphasised that Okpebholo’s comments violate Nigeria’s constitutional guarantee of freedom of movement and depict an alarming disregard for the rule of law.

“Okpebholo’s remarks, warning Obi against entering Edo and claiming his security is not guaranteed, are veiled threats against a law-abiding citizen exercising his constitutional rights,” Ameh stated.

The coalition called on other political leaders, civil society organisations, and citizens to speak out against this dangerous trend. They argued that Obi’s only “offence” is travelling across Nigeria to support essential services like healthcare, education, and humanitarian efforts.

“Should a governor fear acts of charity? This behaviour is a disgrace to our democracy,” the statement continued. “Such threats undermine the fundamental rights to freedom of movement, expression, and association. This reckless display of arrogance and intimidation has no place in Nigeria’s governance.”

The incident, CUPP added, should serve as a wake-up call for Nigerians to stand up for their constitutional protections and demand accountability from their leaders.

The rule of law, they insist, must be upheld—no individual, regardless of their position, should be allowed to trample on the rights of citizens. Nigeria and Edo State deserve leadership that prioritises liberty, respect, and the democratic principles on which the nation was built.

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has condemned what it describes as a blatant death threat issued by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, directed at 2027 presidential hopeful, Peter Obi.In a statement that...

[2

post-7767","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
["GET
