Kayode Akiolu, a member of the House of Representatives representing Lagos Island II Constituency, expressed his support for a proposed bill aimed at restricting public servants and their families from attending private schools and healthcare facilities in Nigeria. Interestingly, Akiolu emphasised that his backing hinges on the bill’s inclusivity\u2014if it encompasses politicians, he\u2019s fully on board.<\/p>\n
Akiolu highlighted the importance of a national approach that promotes the best interests of the country\u2019s development. \u201cWe are building a democratic society that values freedom of association and movement,” he said. “However, I believe the proposed bill is meant to encourage civil servants to give their best, and for that to happen, it must be applied to everyone, including politicians.\u201d<\/p>\n
He pointed out that the current move by the House of Representatives, which has already seen a bill for its first reading, is designed to ensure civil servants contribute more effectively to national growth. The bill, sponsored by Mr. Godwin Ogah, a lawmaker representing Isuikwuato\/Umunneochi in Abia State, seeks to prevent public officials and their immediate families from patronising private educational and healthcare facilities in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
Akiolu elaborated on his stance, saying, \u201cIf the bill is amended to include children of politicians, I will support it 100 percent. The key is that when everyone, including the President, Bank Secretary, or any public official, educates their children within Nigeria\u2019s public institutions, it will elevate the quality of our education system to a world-class standard.\u201d<\/p>\n
Beyond education, Akiolu also underscored the need for significant investment in Nigeria\u2019s healthcare sector. Citing Nigeria\u2019s historical reputation as a medical hub\u2014where foreign royals, including the Saudi royal family, used to seek treatment in Nigeria before the industry faced decline\u2014he emphasized the importance of reversing this trend. \u201cWe need to revisit our healthcare system and ensure it remains attractive to Nigerians and foreigners alike,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
