{"id":8162,"date":"2025-08-08T10:35:25","date_gmt":"2025-08-08T10:35:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/?p=8162"},"modified":"2025-08-08T10:35:49","modified_gmt":"2025-08-08T10:35:49","slug":"gmo-foods-not-dangerous-for-nigerians-fg-confirms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/2025\/08\/08\/gmo-foods-not-dangerous-for-nigerians-fg-confirms\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018GMO Foods Not Dangerous For Nigerians\u2019- FG Confirms"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"mvp-content-body-top\" class=\"left relative\">\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\" class=\"left relative\" data-autoplacement-article-body=\"true\">\n<h4>The Federal Government, through the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control\u00a0 (NAFDAC), has assured Nigerians that Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in food are safe for consumption, provided proper safety evaluations and labelling protocols are followed.<\/h4>\n<p>Speaking during a live appearance on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television breakfast show, on Thursday, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof.\u00a0<strong>Mojisola Adeyeye,<\/strong>\u00a0said there is widespread misconception about GMOs, which often results in unnecessary public fear.<\/p>\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1831369\" data-autoplacement=\"true\" data-uid=\"031a0\">\n<div id=\"mgw1831369_031a0\">\n<div class=\"mgbox\" data-template-type=\"container\">\n<div class=\"mgheader\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Adeyeye, a professor of pharmaceutics, emphasised that NAFDAC collaborates closely with the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) to ensure that all genetically modified food items are adequately tested and certified safe before entering the Nigerian market.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cGMOs are not bad for us, depending on what type of foods they are and whether safety considerations have been taken,<\/em>\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n<p>Adeyeye shared her approach to healthy food choices, advising Nigerians to pay attention to product labelling.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m a food freak. I want to know that what I\u2019m eating will give me a good health outcome,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI look at the label. I want to be sure NAFDAC\u2019s label is on it\u2026 and if it\u2019s genetically modified, it should be written.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to her, food labelling gives consumers the power to make informed decisions, especially in distinguishing between organic and non-organic foods.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou put labels [on foods] that are not organic, and people have the choice to buy which one they want,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she added.<\/p>\n<p>Adeyeye further explained that while NAFDAC is responsible for approving food items for public consumption, it relies on technical inputs from NBMA before granting clearance.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe cannot approve GMO foods without NBMA\u2019s certification,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0she stressed.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWithout them certifying that they have done their due diligence\u2026 we cannot proceed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>She also noted that other regulatory bodies at the state level have roles to play in monitoring food safety at local markets, but NAFDAC\u2019s primary mandate remains quality control, safety verification, and certification of food and drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Her remarks come amid growing public concern about the quality of food items sold across markets in Nigeria, especially those believed to be genetically altered.
