{"id":8599,"date":"2025-09-08T16:56:05","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T16:56:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/?p=8599"},"modified":"2025-09-08T16:56:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-08T16:56:15","slug":"imo-protest-apc-members-oppose-el-rufais-imo-visit-for-the-odenigbo-lectures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/beadysword.com.ng\/blog\/2025\/09\/08\/imo-protest-apc-members-oppose-el-rufais-imo-visit-for-the-odenigbo-lectures\/","title":{"rendered":"Imo Protest: APC Members Oppose El-Rufai\u2019s Imo Visit for the Odenigbo Lectures"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"mvp-content-main\" class=\"left relative\">\n<p>APC Crowds in Owerri, the Imo State capital, on Saturday staged a protest against former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, for bringing ex-Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to the Odenigbo Lecture Series organised by the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri.<\/p>\n<p>The protest began after both politicians arrived at the Assumpta Cathedral, venue of the annual lecture.<\/p>\n<p>Obi, who was the Labour Party\u2019s presidential candidate in 2023, had welcomed El-Rufai to Imo State a day earlier, where the former governor was also received by the traditional ruler of Nekede Ancient Kingdom, Eze Agumanu.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-18\">\n<div align=\"center\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1524595905268-5\" data-google-query-id=\"CNa5h_XOyY8DFdiLgwcd52Irxw\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/14001636\/DP_InsidePost_MPU_2_0__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>While El-Rufai\u2019s visit to Nekede went without incident, his presence at a Christian gathering alongside Obi triggered outrage.<\/p>\n<p>APC Men, women, and youths carrying placards stormed the cathedral gates, chanting war songs and accusing Obi of bringing an enemy into Igboland.<\/p>\n<p>Security operatives struggled to prevent the angry crowd from blocking Obi and El-Rufai from entering the cathedral.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the protesters claimed that El-Rufai\u2019s tenure as Kaduna governor was marked by violence against Christians and, therefore, considered his presence in Igboland unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the Imo APC members openly declared that Obi, by associating with El-Rufai, had lost their trust and respect.<\/p>\n<p>Some of their placards read, \u201cStop deceiving us, Peter Obi,\u201d \u201cEl Rufai is an enemy,\u201d and \u201cWe don\u2019t want you in Imo State.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur respect for Obi has evaporated today. By identifying with an enemy of Ndigbo, he has also made himself an enemy,\u201d they declared.<\/p>\n<p>They added, \u201cNdigbo APC\u00a0 will never take Obi seriously again after his open relationship with El-Rufai.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the protests, Obi and El-Rufai had attended a private meeting on Friday with key stakeholders of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, at the residence of Chief Dr C.J. Oparah in Awaka, Owerri North Local Government Area.<\/p>\n<p>The closed-door session brought together several Igbo leaders, including Professor Batos Nwadike, Chief Mike Nwachukwu, Rt. Hon.
