The Plateau State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has formally confirmed the existence of what it describes as a Christian genocide taking place in the state and other parts of the country, particularly across the Middle Belt and northern regions. This aligns with the consistent position of Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who has repeatedly referred to the ongoing violence and mass killings as \u201cgenocide.\u201d<\/p>\n

The State CAN Chairman, Rev. Dr Dunka Gomwalk, made the declaration during the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting held on Thursday at The Covenant Word Christian Centre International<\/em> in Jos. He stated that despite persistent denial by the Nigerian government, Christians across the country are being systematically targeted by Islamic extremist groups and armed Fulani bandits. He cited widespread killings, persecution, and the displacement of Christian communities in several northern states.<\/p>\n

In a communiqu\u00e9 issued at the end of the meeting and signed by Rev. Gomwalk, the body also condemned threats to the lives of outspoken figures\u2014including Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, the President of the Berom Youth Movement, Barr. Solomon Mwantiri and other Christian advocates who have spoken against the killings in the state.\"\"<\/p>\n

The Council expressed deep concern over what it described as an ongoing genocide against Christians in Nigeria, noting the existence of empirical evidence such as mass burial sites and detailed victim documentation in Plateau and other northern states.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe State Executive Council affirms with a loud voice that there is<\/em> a Christian genocide taking place in Nigeria. There is evidence of mass graves, and memorial sites will soon be erected in Plateau State to honour victims of the violence,\u201d the communiqu\u00e9 reads.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also condemn the threats to the lives of Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, Barr. Solomon Mwantiri, and other Christian voices who have spoken against the continued killing of Christians in Plateau State. We call on both the Federal and State Governments to act decisively to protect lives and property, regardless of religious affiliation.<\/p>\n

\u201cJustice, fairness, and accountability remain the foundation for national peace and unity. We urge all believers to continue upholding peace, prayer, and constructive advocacy despite ongoing challenges,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n

Addressing the plight of internally displaced persons (IDPs) created by persistent violence in the state, the Council urged government authorities to ensure their safe return to ancestral homes, provide adequate security, and empower affected communities to rebuild their livelihoods.<\/p>\n

With political tensions already rising ahead of the 2027 general elections, CAN cautioned Christians to place unity and the integrity of the Church above partisan loyalties.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolitics will come and go, but the Church remains. Believers should demonstrate maturity, love, and restraint in all political engagements.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere must be unity in the body of Christ, as the peace and stability of Plateau State should remain paramount in our hearts and actions.
