The House Committee on Safety Standards and Regulations has called on the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tincan Island Port Command, to maintain strict surveillance and prevent the entry of substandard and harmful products into the country.<\/p>\n

\"\"The lawmakers appealed on Wednesday, 5 November 2025, during an oversight visit to the Command. The visit was aimed at assessing ongoing operations, ensuring alignment with global best practices, and reinforcing national safety standards.<\/p>\n

During the engagement, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, reiterated the Service\u2019s commitment to protecting the nation through effective border management.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt Tincan Island Port, we prioritise national security, trade facilitation, and revenue generation. Our activities are guided by the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, which mandates us to ensure that what is declared is what is seen, and that proper duties are paid promptly,\u201d Onyeka stated.<\/figure>\n
He explained that the Command continues to work closely with relevant agencies to ensure proper cargo inspection and timely intervention whenever a consignment is suspected to contain unsafe or substandard items.\u201cIn situations where we suspect a cargo contains anything that might harm society, we invite the appropriate authorities. We have sustained this progressive synergy to date,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Chairman of the Committee, Honourable David Zacharias, commended the Command for its dedication, describing the oversight visit as essential to strengthening safety compliance across the country\u2019s trade corridors.<\/figure>\n
