The service said the move is based on the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, and relevant international agreements on temporary vehicle admission.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, the policy applies to non-commercial vehicles owned by visitors coming to Nigeria for tourism, business, diplomatic, or personal reasons. It aims to make cross-border travel easier, support regional integration, and improve compliance with international standards.

Travellers are required to present documents such as a valid international passport, driver’s license, vehicle registration, insurance, and a Carnet de Passages en Douane (CPD) at the point of entry. Once verified, Customs will issue a Temporary Vehicle Admission Permit valid for up to 90 days, with a possible 30-day extension if approved.

Vehicles under this arrangement can move freely within Nigeria but must not be sold, rented, modified, or used for commercial purposes. On exit, the vehicle and customs clearance documents must be presented. In cases of accident, theft, or breakdown, the nearest Customs office must be informed.

The NCS said the initiative shows its commitment to transparency, smooth travel, and stronger cross-border cooperation.
