The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Lagos has shown its commitment to community development and youth empowerment with the launch of a new sports facility in Ibafon, Lagos.

The facility, named the Wale Adeniyi Sports Arena (WASA), was built as part of the Command’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts. The Comptroller-General of Customs officially commissioned it, Dr Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.

Speaking at the event, Dr Adeniyi described the project as more than just a sports centre. He said it is a smart investment in promoting peace, preventing crime, and creating opportunities for young people.

The modern sports arena is designed to provide a safe space for recreation, talent development, and positive youth engagement. It is expected to host local leagues, training sessions, and community events.

. Earlier , the Customs Area Controller of the Western Marine Command, Comptroller Patrick Ntadi, described the sports arena as a corporate social responsibility initiative aimed at promoting youth development, community engagement, curtailing crime among youths, and fostering sustainable peace.

Ntadi said the facility was named in honour of Wale Adeniyi, a former National Public Relations Officer of the Service, in recognition of his dedication, professionalism, and exemplary service.

He emphasised that the arena would provide a safe platform for youths to engage in constructive activities, helping to steer them away from crime, drug abuse, and other social vices.

“Security is not only about enforcement; it is also about prevention. By providing safe spaces for recreation and mentorship, we are investing in peace, stability, and the future of our community,” Ntadi said.

The CAC urged community leaders and stakeholders to take ownership of the facility to ensure its proper utilisation and maintenance.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by senior customs officers, Apapa Command: Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, Tin Can Island Command: Comptroller Frank Onyeka, (PTML) Command Comptroller Joe Anani,  representatives of security agencies, the Executive Chairman of Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government Area, Hon. Olalekan Olu Akindipe, community leaders, and youths from the host communities.

According to officials, the initiative will help strengthen the relationship between the Customs Service and the community while giving young people constructive activities to focus on.
