The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has hit a new milestone. It has increased its crude oil processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), surpassing its original design capacity of 650,000 bpd. The achievement was confirmed after a performance test by the refinery’s process licensors.

This is a major step for the refinery, which is already the world’s largest single-train petroleum refining facility — meaning all its operations run through one integrated processing system.

Bigger Plans Ahead

Devakumar Edwin, Vice President of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries Limited, said this is just the beginning. The refinery plans to scale up to 1.4 million bpd within the next 30 months. Edwin noted that the expansion aims to make the facility one of the world’s largest refining complexes while also strengthening Nigeria’s push for energy self-sufficiency.

“The refinery’s growth trajectory reflects a deliberate move toward continental and global refining dominance, not just domestic supply sufficiency,” he said.

A “Ruthless Replication” Strategy

Refinery CEO David Bird also shared updates at the S&P Global Energy conference in London. He said the refinery is currently running at full nameplate capacity and plans to use a “ruthless replication” strategy to expand output. Long-lead equipment has already been ordered, and construction contracts are being awarded.

Bird added that the group could eventually increase refining capacity to 2.1 million bpd, with talks of another refinery in East Africa.

“Nigeria has gone from fuel scarcity to absolute fuel abundance since the Dangote refinery came online,” Bird said.

Export Growth

Since starting production in 2024, the refinery has ramped up output of petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel. Between April 2024 and April 2026, it exported about 57 million barrels of jet fuel alone, according to Kpler data. Jet fuel exports rose from around 20,000 bpd in April 2024 to a peak of roughly 160,000 bpd.

The refinery now supplies both local and international markets, exporting to several African countries as well as the UK, France, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. It has also reached markets in the US and Saudi Arabia.

What’s Next

Beyond fuel, the refinery plans to produce liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), polypropylene, and Linear Alkylbenzene (LAB) — a key raw material for detergent manufacturing. Dangote Industries said the expansion to 1.4 million bpd is expected to create jobs, boost industrial activity, and improve Nigeria’s trade balance.

The refinery is also playing a stabilising role in regional fuel markets, with more African countries turning to it for supply amid disruptions linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

In short, the Dangote refinery isn’t just growing — it’s positioning itself as a major global player in the refining business.
