136 Nigerians in Ethiopian Prisons Set for Transfer Home Under Landmark Agreement

Relief and renewed hope swept through Ethiopian prison cells this week as news broke that 136 Nigerian inmates will soon be transferred back to Nigeria to complete their sentences.

The prisoner transfer was facilitated under a bilateral agreement championed by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mrs Bianca Ojukwu. The deal marks a significant diplomatic step between Nigeria and Ethiopia, prioritising the welfare and rehabilitation of Nigerian citizens incarcerated abroad.

A Second Chance Closer to Home

For the 136 men named in the agreement, the transfer means they will serve the remainder of their sentences on Nigerian soil — closer to family, legal support, and familiar cultural systems. Many relatives have gone years without contact, and the list brings long-awaited confirmation for families back home.
