The Igbo nation has produced remarkable achievers across the world, and Dr Wendy Okolo is one of them.

Born in Nigeria and of Igbo heritage, Dr Wendy Okolo has become one of the leading African women in aerospace engineering, building a distinguished career at NASA’s Ames Research Centre in the United States.

At just 26 years old, she made history as the first Black woman to earn a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington—a groundbreaking achievement that continues to inspire young women around the world.

Today, she works as an aerospace research engineer at NASA, developing advanced technologies for aircraft and future space missions. Her research focuses on autonomous flight systems, aerospace controls, and technologies that improve the safety and performance of future space exploration.

Before joining NASA, she interned with Lockheed Martin, where she worked on NASA’s Orion spacecraft, helping build the experience that launched her outstanding career.

Dr Wendy Okolo has received several prestigious honours for her work, including NASA’s Early Career Researcher Award and recognition from the Black Engineer of the Year Awards.

Her success is a powerful reminder that the Igbo spirit of resilience, excellence, innovation, and education continues to shine on the global stage.

Dr Wendy Okolo leads advanced aerospace research in the Intelligent Systems Division at NASA Ames Research Centre, focusing on autopilot designs, vehicle health monitoring, and spacecraft autonomy.
Dr Okolo’s Specific NASA Research
  • Spacecraft Precision Landing: She designs advanced control systems to reduce landing footprints, ensuring precise, autonomous recoveries for returning Moon and Mars missions. 
  • Drone Autonomy: She leads a team developing automated control systems for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to enable pilotless organ transport, emergency operations, and air taxis. 
  • System Health Monitoring: Her research builds data-driven algorithms that predict component failures in aircraft and spacecraft before they happen. [1,
  • Fuel-Efficient Flight: She holds a U.S. patent for flight path controls that optimise fuel savings, a concept she previously validated with the U.S. Air Force.
