Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Party, demands spending accountability from  President Bola Tinubu’s government. He also challenged the widespread corruption, citing an IMF report that revealed ₦8.83 trillion in government spending for 2025 was not included in the national budget.

Obi described this as “grand corruption,” noting that the unreported spending amounts to about 2% of Nigeria’s GDP and exceeds the total budgets for education and health combined. He said this reflects a deeper pattern of financial mismanagement under the current administration.

He renewed his call for Tinubu to resign, stressing that the administration lacks accountability and commitment to the welfare of citizens.

The IMF warned that such off-budget practices hinder fiscal policy coordination and transparency. However, it acknowledged that the government is beginning to adopt corrective measures, including improving budget laws to ensure all expenditures are captured
