The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has urged the Senate to amend existing trade legislation in order to keep pace with rapid global developments, following a strategic retreat held on August 5, 2026.

The retreat, organised for members of the Senate Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariffs, was designed to deepen lawmakers’ understanding of the service’s digital transformation and wider operational reforms. Speaking at the event, Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi stressed that updated laws are essential to sustaining the momentum of modernisation.

Adeniyi noted that while certain provisions of the current law continue to function effectively, other aspects are in need of revision to accommodate the evolving dynamics of global trade. He described the retreat as a vital platform for ensuring informed legislative oversight — a key ingredient for the long-term success of reform efforts.

Among the initiatives highlighted were the B’Odogwu Trade Management System and intelligence-driven audits, both of which are aimed at boosting revenue generation and strengthening national security.

Senator Jibrin welcomed the NCS’s achievements and assured the service of full legislative support in tackling its challenges. He also congratulated Adeniyi on his re-election as Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation.
