IThe Osun governorship election has come and gone, and while many citizens are celebrating the outcome, the memories of the violence that surrounded the electoral process cannot be ignored. Reports of  28 deaths, injuries, and clashes in different parts of the state have once again highlighted the urgent need to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy from political violence.

Every election should be a contest of ideas, policies, and the will of the people—not a battlefield where innocent lives are lost. Regardless of political affiliation, every Nigerian deserves to exercise their constitutional right to vote without fear of intimidation, violence, or death.

As supporters of Governor Ademola Adeleke celebrate his victory, it is also a time to remember those who lost their lives during the election period and to stand with the families left behind. No political ambition is worth the life of a single citizen.

The relevant security agencies must carry out thorough, transparent, and impartial investigations into every reported case of election-related violence. Anyone found responsible—regardless of political party, status, or influence—should be brought before the law. Justice must not be selective, and accountability must not be sacrificed for politics.

A democracy is strengthened not only by credible elections but also by the protection of human life and the rule of law. If those who died are forgotten, the cycle of political violence will continue. If justice is served, it sends a clear message that violence has no place in our democratic process.

As Osun moves forward, the focus should be on healing, reconciliation, and good governance. Political leaders, supporters, security agencies, and citizens all share a responsibility to ensure that future elections are peaceful, free, and fair.

May the souls of everyone who lost their lives rest in peace, and may their families find comfort. The greatest tribute we can pay to them is to build a democracy where no Nigerian has to die for exercising their right to vote.
