The Federal Government of Nigeria has introduced a new directive that tightens control over official foreign travel by government officials—and it’s a move aimed squarely at curbing unauthorised representation on the international stage.
Under the new rule, ministers and other government appointees must now secure prior approval from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) before embarking on any official trip abroad.

Why the sudden change?
The decision comes amid growing concerns over individuals attending international engagements without proper backing—and taking it upon themselves to speak for the government. A recent controversy involving someone misrepresenting the government on a global platform appears to have been the final straw that triggered this policy shift.

How it will work
Going forward, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been instructed to make OSGF approval a mandatory requirement before processing travel documents or visas for any government official. This effectively ensures that no one slips through the cracks when it comes to representing Nigeria abroad.
The move is expected to strengthen accountability, improve inter-agency coordination, and enforce financial discipline when it comes to public spending on official travel.

The cost of non-compliance
The directive sends a clear message: unauthorised trips will not be tolerated. The Office of the Auditor-General has been tasked with overseeing compliance during audits. Any spending on unsanctioned excursions will be scrutinised, reported—and could attract penalties.
All government officials have been instructed to comply with the new regulations immediately.
