The Nigerian government has taken a significant step to revive the country’s maritime industry by unlocking the long-stalled Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund (CVFF). For the first time in about two decades, eligible shipowners can now access financing of up to $25 million to acquire vessels.

This move, championed by Minister Adegboyega Oyetola, is designed to strengthen the indigenous shipping sector, reduce foreign dominance, and keep more economic value within Nigeria.

According to the Minister, the government has already received 92 applications, with 20 already forwarded to lending institutions for review. To make access easier, the number of participating banks has also been increased from five to twelve.

Beyond helping individual shipowners, the initiative is expected to boost related sectors like shipbuilding and maritime logistics. Industry projections suggest it could create over 30,000 jobs and help develop the skilled manpower Nigeria needs in the maritime field.

The move also aligns with the Tinubu administration’s broader goal of strengthening Nigeria’s position in global maritime trade.
