Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, has said the question of whether he should step down for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is no longer a personal decision between the two politicians.

Obi explained that since both men are now presidential candidates of different political parties, any possible agreement would have to involve the parties themselves.

He made the statement during an interview with Arise Television on Thursday, where he discussed the 2027 presidential election, the opposition coalition, Nigeria’s economy, security, national unity and governance.

Responding to a question on whether he would withdraw his presidential ambition in favour of Atiku, Obi said the situation had moved beyond a discussion between two individuals.

According to him, the issue now involves political parties coming together and determining how such a merger or alliance would work.

Obi compared the situation to two corporations considering a merger, explaining that it would require discussions between the organisations rather than simply an agreement between their chief executives.

His comments come amid continuing efforts by opposition politicians to build a stronger political platform capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 election.

In 2025, Obi, Atiku and other opposition figures were associated with efforts to form a coalition that adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform, fuelling speculation that the former political allies could eventually work together ahead of the 2027 poll.

Kwankwaso Calls on Atiku to Step Aside

Meanwhile, former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has urged Atiku to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race.

Kwankwaso made the call while receiving members of the Fulani Farmers Association at his Abuja residence.

He reportedly urged Atiku to concentrate on his traditional responsibilities as the Wazirin Adamawa, citing his age and health in making the appeal.

The former Kano governor also called on supporters of the ADC presidential candidate to encourage him to step aside from the presidential contest.

The latest comments add another layer to the ongoing debate over who should emerge as the leading opposition candidate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

With several opposition figures seeking a common platform, the question of who will lead the opposition and whether the major contenders can reach an agreement is expected to remain a major issue as the 2027 election approaches.
