The Nigeria Customs Service, Seme Border Command, has started 2026 on a strong note with increased revenue and renewed anti-smuggling efforts.

Within the first three weeks of the year, the command generated about ₦2 billion in revenue. This follows its 2025 performance, where it recorded approximately ₦15.6 billion for the year, including ₦3.6 billion in December alone.

As part of its enforcement activities, Customs officers carried out an operation at the Badagry market on January 21, 2026. During the raid, more than 200 bags of smuggled rice were seized.

The Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Wale Adenuga, said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to stop illegal trade while maintaining steady revenue growth. He explained that officers are monitoring smuggling routes through bush paths as well as markets where illegal goods are sold.

Adenuga spoke during a visit by members of the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN), led by its caretaker chairman, Mr Tunde Ayodele. He assured that the command would continue its anti-smuggling operations and work to exceed last year’s revenue figures.

Mr Ayodele praised the leadership of the Seme Command, noting improved activities and enforcement at the border since Adenuga took charge.

During the visit, Adenuga also represented the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, at a condolence visit to the palace of the late Oba of Badagry.

The Seme Border Command says it will continue to focus on revenue generation and the fight against smuggling as the year progresses.
