The Anambra State Special Anti-Touting Squad Agency (SASA) has intensified efforts to tackle illegal revenue collection and extortion in the state. According to the agency, operatives arrested suspects accused of harassing traders and commercial operators, and the case is being pursued in court through a mobile court arrangement.

SASA’s media aide, Karen James, disclosed this to journalists at the agency’s headquarters in Onitsha. She said the agency remains firm on enforcing laws against unlawful levies and extortion, in line with its commitment to restoring order and protecting legitimate businesses.

James named two suspects, Michael Uwaoma and Ndubuisi Aniukwu, alleging they were involved in extorting traders and commercial operators in areas including Mgbuka Obosi and Umusiome Junction, Nkpor. She further explained that preliminary investigations indicated that Aniukwu acted on the directive of Anthony Onyekwelu, who allegedly set a daily remittance target.

After their arrest, the suspects were arraigned before a magistrate’s court. The court granted bail under strict conditions, including a N100,000 bail bond, a N300,000 fine, and a verified Level 17 civil servant to serve as surety. The matter was also remanded for legal processes while it awaits further hearing, with the case adjourned to June 3, 2026.

The agency also stated that its operatives recently arrested three additional suspects in separate operations around Onitsha and neighbouring communities.

SASA reiterated its zero-tolerance stance toward illegal collection and extortion, urging members of the public to report any incidents of harassment or unlawful demands to the appropriate authorities.
