LAGOS — The Alaba International Market has taken another major step in its evolution with the unveiling and commissioning of its new Conference Centre and modern commercial developments, in a landmark event that brought together government officials, business leaders, traders, industry stakeholders and distinguished award recipients.

The high-profile Gala and Awards Night, held to mark the unveiling of the “New Face of Alaba,” celebrated the resilience, enterprise and contributions of individuals and organisations that have played significant roles in the growth of one of Nigeria’s most important commercial and technology hubs.

Among the distinguished personalities recognised at the event were prominent Nigerian entrepreneurs and business leaders whose investments and leadership continue to contribute to the nation’s private sector and economic development.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), OFR, described the transformation taking place at Alaba International Market as a shining example of Nigerian enterprise, innovation and economic resilience.

He noted that Alaba has grown beyond the traditional definition of a marketplace to become one of Africa’s leading centres for electronics, technology and commerce.

He congratulated the leadership of the International Market Association Electronics (IMAE), particularly its President General, High Chief Dr. Camilus Nnamdi Amajuoyi, as well as the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for their roles in supporting the market’s transformation.

The Minister further noted that Alaba International Market has become an important driver of economic growth, employment and technological advancement, with its influence extending beyond Lagos to other parts of Nigeria and the wider African market.

He also highlighted efforts within the market to promote quality assurance, encourage locally manufactured products and combat counterfeit goods, describing these initiatives as important steps towards positioning Alaba as a trusted and internationally competitive commercial hub.

Security and Economic Development

General Musa also emphasised the strong connection between security and economic prosperity.

He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to providing a safe and enabling environment where businesses can operate, grow and attract investment.

The Minister commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, for his commitment to national security and economic stability, noting that sustainable development requires strong partnerships between government, businesses and citizens.

He urged traders, manufacturers and entrepreneurs within the Alaba community to sustain their culture of innovation, integrity and excellence and continue building businesses capable of competing globally.

Sanwo-Olu Commends Alaba Community

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented at the event by the Deputy Governor, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, also commended the Alaba business community for its contribution to the economic development of Lagos State.

The Governor praised the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of traders and business owners in the market, noting their contribution to commerce, innovation and employment generation.

He reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to the reconstruction of the road linking the Alaba International Market, noting that the project would improve accessibility, enhance the ease of doing business and further stimulate economic activities in the area.
