Nigeria’s Customs Service has dealt a solid blow to the illegal wildlife trade. On August 25, officers from the Kano/Jigawa Area Command intercepted a consignment of trafficked animals during an operation along the Kano-Daura Road, arresting three suspects in the process.

The operation wasn’t a lucky break—it was guided by intelligence and carried out strictly according to the rules, in line with the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and the international CITES agreement that governs the trade in endangered species.

What officers found in that consignment was grim. Among the animals recovered were four caracal cats, four chimpanzees, two baby gorillas, and several other endangered species. These are animals that should be thriving in the wild, not stuffed into vehicles for profit.

The suspects tried to slip away by offering a bribe during the arrest, but that tactic didn’t work. The patrol team’s professionalism held, and the bribery attempt was shut down on the spot.

Both the wildlife and the suspects have now been handed over to the Special Wildlife Unit, which will handle further investigation. Speaking on the breakthrough, DCC Usman Adamu thanked the leadership of the NCS for their dedication to the fight against wildlife trafficking.

It’s a reminder that behind the scenes, law enforcement is working hard to protect some of the planet’s most vulnerable species.
