Peter Obi: I Never Borrowed a Kobo From Any Bank as Anambra Governor

Peter Obi has repeated his claim that he did not borrow money from any bank or financial institution during his eight years as governor of Anambra State.

The former governor, now the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), said he never approached a bank and never issued bonds on behalf of the state government.

“I, Mr Peter Obi, didn’t approach any financial institution to borrow money or issue bonds on behalf of Anambra State in the eight years I was in government,” he said on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Thursday night.

His comments come amid a public disagreement with the current governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, who has accused him of leaving behind unpaid debts and gratuities.

Obi pushed back, saying he left office with a clean slate. “On the day I left office, I was not owing any salary, gratuity or pension that was scheduled to be paid by the government,” he said. “We are not owing any contractor or supplier who has executed his job, certified and verified, not one. And that is the way I left.”

The exchange keeps the question of Anambra’s finances under Obi’s watch in the public eye — a dispute that now seems likely to follow him into the 2027 campaign.
