In recent comments, Peter Obi, one of the leading contenders for the 2027 Nigerian presidential race, voiced his concern over the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Obi emphasised that it doesn’t make sense for the Nigerian government to keep Kanu incarcerated, especially given the circumstances.

During an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Obi expressed his advocacy for dialogue and political solutions, not only in Nnamdi Kanu’s case but also for similar issues across Nigeria. He questioned why Kanu was still being held, particularly for what some describe as speaking against government officials or using vulgar language.

Obi stated, “Why is he still being held? It doesn’t make sense to me. Some have said he used vulgar words, but I’ve not seen it. For me, it’s not about the words used but about finding a political resolution.”

He further highlighted that personal insults or criticisms should not warrant indefinite detention, and as a leader, his focus remains on improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians. “My duty is for the common man to put food on their table,” he said.

When asked if he would approach such issues with a similar mindset nationwide, Obi responded affirmatively. “If there are people I can talk to, I’ll talk to them,” he affirmed. Using the example of bandits in the North-East, he explained, “I’ll meet with them to establish a link and say, ‘Enough is enough,’ and then deal with the situation decisively.”

Obi’s stance underscores his belief in dialogue and pragmatic solutions over confrontation, emphasising the importance of diplomacy in resolving Nigeria’s complex security and political challenges.
