The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has launched a new initiative called “Paint Your Coast,” aimed at promoting the blue economy by combining art with maritime awareness.

The program was officially launched at Akodo-Ise in Lagos State. Speaking at the event, Mr Anda Emmanuel, the Lekki Port Manager at the NPA, highlighted how marine art can unlock new opportunities in Nigeria’s maritime industry.

The initiative is organised by the African Maritime Art Exhibition (AMAE) in partnership with the National Gallery of Art (NGA). Its main goals are to improve ocean literacy and encourage environmental stewardship among young people living in coastal communities. The program also seeks to showcase how art can drive economic empowerment.

Participants in the initiative will receive training before creating artworks. These pieces may be featured in AMAE’s upcoming exhibitions.

Other speakers at the launch, including AMAE convener Ezinne Azunna and Dr Akanbi Williams, praised the program for encouraging creativity and environmental awareness among young Nigerians.

The “Paint Your Coast” initiative includes various artistic activities and a tour of the Eco Restoration Mangrove Sanctuary, aimed at promoting conservation efforts.

Overall, the program seeks to inspire the next generation to appreciate and connect with Nigeria’s maritime heritage while exploring career opportunities in the blue economy.
