The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has launched a multi-agency task force to tackle the persistent traffic gridlock on roads leading to the Lagos ports.

The move is aimed at improving cargo movement out of the ports and keeping port operations running efficiently.

The decision follows a meeting with key stakeholders, including security agencies and freight operators. During the meeting, several critical issues were identified—such as illegal extortion by some road users and unclear responsibilities among different agencies.

The new task force will carry out regular monitoring of truck movements but will not set up checkpoints. Instead, it will use a dedicated WhatsApp platform where officers can report traffic problems instantly.

The NPA is also reviewing its contract with the Electronic Truck Call-Up (ETO) system to make operations more robust.

The authority says it is committed to ensuring smooth cargo flow, which is essential for improving Nigeria’s port competitiveness and international reputation.
