The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has launched a new system to address the ongoing congestion caused by empty containers at the Apapa and Tin Can Island port corridors.

The new measure introduces a “movement code” to streamline the handling of empty containers at the terminals. Under this system, every empty container will be assigned a unique identifier on the Electronic Call-Up (ETO) platform. Trucks will only be allowed into the port if their details match exactly with what is in the system.

According to the NPA, obtaining this code from designated holding bays is now mandatory for all truck drivers. The goal is to ensure that each truck is properly matched to its specific empty container before gaining access.

This initiative is expected to improve traffic flow, boost operational efficiency, and strengthen compliance with port access rules. It also aims to end the misuse of truck-container allocations.

The move comes as a direct response to the long-standing gridlock and disorder that have plagued the two major ports, and it signals the authority’s commitment to restoring order at the nation’s busiest seaports.
