The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has announced a major increase in the wages of Nigerian seafarers, aligning with International Labour Organisation (ILO) standards.

Dr Dayo Mobereola, Director General of NIMASA, announced during the 2026 Day of the Seafarer celebration. He also highlighted that 2,459 cadets have been trained through the National Seafarers Development Programme.

Seafarers play a vital role in global trade, transporting over 80% of goods by volume. Dr Mobereola acknowledged the tough conditions they face, including long hours at sea and time away from their families.

The National Joint Industrial Council has significantly boosted seafarers’ earnings through this adjustment. NIMASA’s broader agenda includes improving safety, welfare, and professional development for seafarers.

The event called on all maritime stakeholders to work together to ensure decent working conditions and continued support for seafarers. Their contributions remain essential to Nigeria’s maritime reputation and economic growth.
